FII India to host a Carpenters' Meet to promote Canadian Wood

July 14, 2015: Forestry Innovation Consulting India Pvt. Ltd. (FII India), a non-profit market development agency for Canadian solid wood lumber in India is pleased to host a Carpenters' Meet on July 16 2015, in Chandigarh. In this special session, a team of wood experts from FII will introduce Canadian wood species of Western Hemlock, Yellow-Cedar, Douglas-fir, Spruce-Pine-Fir (SPF) and Western Red Cedar to carpenters, contactors and other wood working professionals.

The workshop has been designed to equip the audience with the technical knowhow on Canadian Wood whilst helping them explore possibilities and versatility of using lumber from Canada. It will provide a firsthand glimpse of the wood's features, adaptability, end-use applications, physical properties and availability in the Chandigarh region. The half day workshop will also focus on the merits of sourcing wood from sustainably managed forestsand how the attendees can use the wood in their projects or product line.



WOOD SPECIES

· Western Hemlock

Western Hemlock is a perfect choice for varied interior applications and furniture manufacturing. This non-resinous specie easily takes stains and finishes very well. It can be either retained in its beautiful natural colour or stained as per choice of the customer.

Applications: Solid wood doors and furniture, interior panelling, mouldings and cabinet work.

· Yellow-Cedar

Yellow-Cedar's slow growth over approx. a hundred years makes it a high-quality, stable wood. The USP of the specie is its natural resistance to termites, decay and rot. Featuring smooth and fine texture, yellow-cedar is perfect for carvings and turnings as well.

Applications: Doors & door frames,furniture, decorative panelling, exterior cladding, mouldings and cabinet work.

OTHER SPECIES INCLUDE:-

· Spruce-Pine-Fir (SPF)

The Spruce-pine-fir (SPF) group is mainly a mix of white spruce, lodge pole pine and a small percentage of subalpine fir. SPF has high dimensional stabilityand superior gluing properties.

Applications: Flat-packed furniture, framing in housing, modular or pre-fabricated houses, interior finishing, boxes, packing cases and concrete formwork.



· Douglas-Fir

Douglas-fir is one of the most durable and strong species. It has extraordinary strength-to-weight ratio, thus making it stronger than even teak. Its availability in large dimension makes it an ideal choice for post & beam construction. Douglas-fir is also highly preferred for glu-laminated beams.

Applications: Doors, windows, furniture, structural use in large scale building projects.



· Western Red Cedar

Western red cedar has anappealing dark colour, light-weight and fine texture. The specie has natural resistance to termites, decay and rot.

Applications: Outdoor furniture, playground equipment, roof shingles, exterior siding, exterior cladding, decking, greenhouses and saunas.
